Sutton was born James Cook[ in Sutton Coldfield to father Steve and mother Jeanette. He is the oldest of three children, with a younger brother Ben aged 20, and sister Amy aged 14.
Sutton derived his stage name from his birth town, Sutton Coldfield. He attended The Burton Borough School in Newport, Shropshire.
He is currently managed by Rossmore Personal Management, based in London.
He lives with his on-screen Hollyoaks' sister Jacqui Malota played by Claire Cooper as roommates, as stated on the backstage tour on the official Hollyoaks website.

It follows the lives of a group of people/families with all their up's and down's. James Sutton plays John Paul McQueen who had a crush on a guy at school Craig Dean played by Guy Burnett, then during the school prom/disco Craig kisses John Paul. This of course leads to confusion, eventually John Paul admits hes gay. Craig still tries to pretend hes straight, by having a girlfriend, even though he has slept with John Paul and told him that he loves him.
